In 2009, Cristin decided to start a Community Acupuncture clinic at Wellbeing a few days a week, in order to be able to offer a less expensive option to people who might not normally be able to afford acupuncture. This has given her the ability to give back to the Lake Norman community that has supported her for over a decade.

“Community acupuncture” means that you will receive your acupuncture treatment in a large, quiet, comfortable room with up to three other people. You will most likely be sitting in a recliner, rather than lying on a table. You do not need to disrobe; you just need to roll your sleeves up to your elbows and your pants up to your knees. You and your acupuncturist will speak quietly, in private, outside the room before you get treated. There will be other people getting treated at the same time, in the same room, in the same way. Community acupuncture allows people to have treatments more often; to be treated in the company of family and friends; and to create and take part in a collective energy field which makes the individual treatments more powerful and clinically effective.

Wellbeing’s community acupuncture uses sliding scale fees. For thousands of years in China, acupuncture was considered the “people’s medicine”: low-tech, inexpensive, easily available, and efficient. In the West, in the last thirty years acupuncture has become more of a luxury item. People pay higher amounts for private, less frequent visits where they receive a lot more one on one attention. With our community acupuncture we focus solely on the acupuncture. There is not a lot of discussion about nutrition, herbal medicine, and relaxation techniques like we offer during private visits. We get most of the information we need to diagnose you from a short discussion and from looking at your tongue and feeling your pulse. This allows us to keep costs low and pass that savings on to our patients. The sliding scale fee works like this; we ask that you pay us what you can afford on our scale of $20-45.00. Keep in mind that you may need a series of treatments. We want you to come in for acupuncture frequently enough and regularly enough to see improvements. We suggest that, if you have a combined yearly household income of 50k or more, you pay the higher end of the scale. If you make under 20k a year, please feel free to pay the lower end of the scale.

Wellbeing has no relationship whatsoever with insurance companies, and we are not subsidized by any state or federal program. Wellbeing has chosen to reduce our fees so that our acupuncture treatments will be affordable to more people.

Your privacy is always a concern for us. Your health diagnosis will never be discussed in front of others, unless you want it to be. We will always make an effort to discuss your health concerns in a soft voice, out of ear shot of others, unless you want it to be shared. Please keep in mind that Community Acupuncture is done in a shared space, and voices can carry. Keeping your voice down ensures that any discussions between us will be kept private.

A few housekeeping details: please bring whatever you need to make yourself comfortable, such as earplugs or headphones. We have pillows and blankets and lovely music, but you may bring your own if you prefer. If you bring music with headphones, please turn the volume down low enough so that those around you can’t hear your music. Please take all your personal belongings with you into the treatment room, and please keep your shoes on until you sit down in your chosen recliner. You may place your belongings on or under the side tables. Remember that our community works best when everyone is reasonably flexible.
